My Summer Protective Styles for Relaxed Hair

Instagram is a lie!  It can’t be 8 weeks since I’ve relaxed my hair, I know time flies but sheesh!  I’ve just been going through the motions through my hair this time around.  I’ve tried to beat the heat in a couple of ways when it comes to styling my hair.  This Healthy Hair Care update will focus more on my summer protective styles for relaxed hair.

In case you missed it, the last hair update I gave was in my 2 Week post video when I blow dried and straightened my hair.  Missed it?  You know I got you covered….

…But of course the humidity just wouldn’t let me be great so of course this style didn’t last too long.   Here I am two days after filming that video.

So I knew rocking my hair out was not gonna work for me this time around.  Then I tried to rock the u part wig I made with my Sew Chic Virgin Hair but again the humidity took over.  I ended up having to flat iron my hair every two to three days and I just wasn’t feeling adding so much heat to my hair.  Even if I flexi rodded my hair the night before I found myself making a couple of passes with my flat iron just so it blended good.  Again time slipped away from me and next thing I knew I was rocking my u part for 3 weeks straight!

In the time that was rocking my u part I didn’t add too much product to my hair.  For my leave out I just added Elasta QP Olive Oil and Mango Butter Leave in conditioner as a replacement for my normal moisturizer since it also has that creamy consistency.  Smells the same too, I never really appreciated it as a leave in but for this purpose it was great (I don’t like to waste products!).  I didn’t even add any edge control because my Design Essentials Sleek Edge Control ended up going bad after leaving it open one day so I just let it rock.  Every couple of days I would also add my oil mixture to my scalp and edges as well.

After taking my braids down I detangled and did a good massage with my favorite prepoo oil, the Tropic Isle Living Red Pimento Hair Growth Oil.  I love to prep my hair for washing with the Tropic Isle oils.  If you missed last week’s hair post, definitely check it out, not only is there finally a full review here of the oil I’m always raving about but there’s any opportunity for you to win a bottle among other great prizes!

….But back to washing my hair

The fact that I used minimal product over the course of the three weeks rocking my unit, I wanted to dive into a new product that has been in my stash for a few months now.  I was hoping the EdenBody Works All Natural Coconut Shea Cleansing Co Wash would be my go to cleansing product of the Summer.  I was used to using a different co wash which I’ve always felt was a bit drying to my hair and that was not what my hair needed in its life at the moment.  My ends have been pretty dry ever since the Winter so I’m trying to stay away from shampooing so often and focusing on conditioning.

For co washing some people use a regular conditioner, hell from time to time I’d use a cheapie conditioner just to get the job done.  But honestly I’d rather use a conditioner (mine of choice lately, Aussie Moist) for what’s it’s made for though, instant conditioning after cleansing.  Co washing to me you would want to look for a product thats specified as a cleansing conditioner.  The Eden Body Coconut Shea Cleansing Co Wash is sulphate free, producing very little soapy suds to dry out your hair.

I’m happy to say I was able to use the EdenBody co wash for two applications for that wash.  The second may have been overkill but I wanted to be sure my hair was clean after being braided up for three weeks.  That’s just what it did too, my hair felt super clean but not that squeaky clean where it’s thirsting for moisture.  It’s so good I’ve even started using it for Khloe’s hair now, though I do want to scoop up their line of kid’s products for her the fact that EdenBody products are all natural, I’m comfortable using this on her hair as well.  Since trying it just two or three weeks ago we’ve used up a third of the jar!

From there to instant conditioning as mentioned before I then follow my normal routine of t shirt drying and my LOC (Liquid Leave In, Oil and Cream) method and style.  Beside my normal high and low buns you know I had to do another of my favorite protective styles, my two goddess braids.  This is how I’ve been wearing my hair now since Friday, as a matter of fact as I’m typing this I know I should be redoing these braids but hopefully when I tie my scarf it’ll lay down the strays at least for one more day.

This past week I had an event to go to where I knew there’d be lots of naturalistas so of course I did my fake out twistout for my Relaxed Hair using some new samples I received from Creme of Nature with Argan oil from Morocco.  they recently extended their line to cater towards curly natural hair and I just had to try it since that was the look I was going for.  Check out the demonstration here.

Now for next week’s hair post I need a little help on your part.  What would you like to see next?

  • I HEART goddess braids—especially during the summer time! Alot of ladies can get amazing braid outs from them—but it NEVER happens to me. LOL.

I’d love to see more protective styles!

Thanks for sharing your #washdayexperience chica!
