Music Monday – R&B Edition

If you know me personally you know I love music.  Music these days just isn’t the same.  It’s rare these days to find music that I just live to play.  Now if you’ve watched some of the videos over on the Kay’s Ways channel you may have noticed an instrumental playing in the background.  And who doesn’t play music while they’re getting ready sometimes?  So I thought I’d share what I’ve been listening to most recently.  If this is something you would like to continue seeing here on the blog definitely give me your feedback and I can follow up with Music Mondays (not weekly though, y’all know me and schedules, I’m trying to do better lol).

Trey Songz – Trigga (Released 7/1/2014)

For as long as I’ve had the album I could not stop playing Trigga.  I love me some Trey Songz and to me he came back with his best album to far!  I can play the whole CD straight through with no problem,  Every week my favorite song changes but “Y.A.S” is one I play continuously.    I love the way the story goes from him not being -ish to him being the -sh in the same damn song lol.  The flow he had on it and the way it switches up this will always be top 3 of this album.

Other stand outs for me Touchin’ Lovin’ with the Barb hereself, Ms. Nicki Minaj, “Late Night” featuring Juicy J and of course “Smartphones”.  And y’all know Trey knows how to do a ballad (omg do they call them that anymore lol).  I love “Disrespectful” which he is singing with his new boo, Mila J.  From “Cake” to “All We Do”, this album is on point.  Like I said, in my opinion it is his best to date.
Chris Brown – X (Released 9/16/2014)
For the most part of last week I have only been listening to Mr. Breezy himself.  Yes Chris Brown is back with his sixth studio album called X.  Of course on repeat is “New Flame” featuring my love Usher (Oh yeah and Rick Ross too lol).  I’ve been playing this song before the album like crazy, I think this was a great collaboration for them to do.  Breezy actually has a few features throughout the album; including Akon, R Kelly, Lil Wayne & Tyga, Jhene Aiko just to name a few.
I have the deluxe version of “X” so I have so many joints from this one that I’m feeling.  Starting with the first track which has the same title as the album.  I think it is the perfect intro song.  Then there’s “Time to Love”, I love songs with this tempo, they just make me happy.
“Autumn Leaves” featuring Kendrick Lamar is fire!!!  I be ready to have me a Michael Jackson moment (lol arms out, head back just snapping away).  Kendrick did his thing on it, I just absolutely love this song!
Another one of my faves which features the beautiful Brandy is “Do Better”.  Their voices together always make beautiful music together.  I was just playing “Put It Down” not too long before this album dropped so I was happy to hear them collab again.
Jhene Aiko – Souled Out (Released 9/16/2014)
I loved Jhene Aiko’s EP Sail Away that dropped last year.  If you are not familiar with Jhene Aiko you may know her song “The Worst”.  You know “I don’t need you, I don’t need you but I waaannnt you”.  Even though she is just staring to get recognition she’s been in the game for years.  I’m talking B2K years, yup she used to be down with Omarion and them.
Well now she’s here with her first official album and I have had it on repeat all weekend.  Her sultry voice just speaks to us ladies.  We can feel her through the music.  She has a freestyle song on there “Pretty Bird” where she went in.  The freestyle was so good that it became an official track by them adding Common on it.

Being that I just started listening to this Cd on Saturday I can’t give as much detail.  I will say some of my standout songs on Jhene Aiko’s Souled Out are “W.A.Y.S”, “It’s Cool”, “Wading”.”Eternal Sunshine” and “Promises”.  Ok well, maybe a few details.

I absolutely love Jhene AIko’s storytelling in her songs.  She tackles things all of us ladies go through which makes her so easy to relate to.  Her flow on her songs and her voice is great, I hope she has much success in this business.
Just a side note, I was watching the Wendy Williams show last week and she mentioned that Jhene Aiko and Mila J are sisters, I had no idea!!! Mila J is another new up and coming r&b singer who just recently had a hit with that smoke, drink and break up song.  She’s the one who I mentioned before who has a song with Trey Songz.
Jay Z & Beyonce – On The Run Tour (HBO special premiered 9/20/2014)
Now I could not end this post without paying homage to my King & Queen.  Yes Jay + Bey did their damn thang on that HBO special this weekend.  These two have been the soundtrack to my life.  For each and every one of their albums I can recall that time in my life.  Jay took me through high school and beyond.  Beyonce’s first solo album came out shortly after I got my first apartment.  These two hold a special place in my heart, besides Michael Jackson probably my favorites of all time.
Me and babe have seen both of them in concert on multiple occasions but unfortunately (three kids later) we wasn’t able to go this year.  In all actuality we was gearing up to buy tickets if they went to the Barclay Center since we have yet to be at an event there.  But it’s all good HBO took care of that for me.
Again with this tour, Jay + Bey made history.  A husband and wife team both at the top of their game.  The On The Run Tour was epic!!!  I am definitely a part of the Beyhive so I was in my living room mad hyped.  When she sang “Resentment” OMG chills went through me, you felt her pain.  Did y’all read between the lines?  And can we talk about how she was highlighted for the Gods, yassss!!!  She even bought Onika (Nicki Minaj) out for the “Flawless” remix like Got damn, got damn, got damn.

I loved the end where they showed their life with Blue Ivy and when they were singing On The Run, Jay was like “This is Real Life”!  It was just so beautiful!  I could sit here and go on and on about this concert but I think this post is already wayyy too long.  The On The Run tour will remain on my DVR forever!!!  If you missed the show be sure to check your local listings because they’re already replayed the show a few times.  If you saw it let me know what were some of your favorite parts of the show.
Hope you enjoyed my Music Monday.  I listen to all types of music, but mainly r&b and hip hop. This is something I plan on bringing more of in the future so be sure to subscribe so you don’t miss out!
Thank you for coming through & Stay Blessed!
