I Got Brushes Going Up…on Tuesday

What’s makeup talk without talking about the tools it takes to get the look you want to achieve? It’s been a while since I spoke about a makeup brush here on Kay’s Ways so I decided to start a new ongoing series called, The Tools Tuesdays. Yeah I’ll still do Techie Tuesdays but I don’t talk about technology like every week so the same thing will go with this series.

Now I don’t have that many brushes from MAC Cosmetics, I tend to purchase these one at a time since they’re not that inexpensive you know. The first brush set I had was a gift I had from my bestie that she gifted me one Christmas many years back. Throughout my various moves I no longer have those brushes. I wasn’t as well versed in makeup back then so I was too careless with those gems. Boy I wish I knew what holiday set it was. Now as a makeup addict and brush junkie, It was definitely time to start my MAC makeup brush collection.

I love eye brushes that give precise application, especially for these hooded eyes.  So far I have accumulated 3 of their eye brushes so let’s go through them right quick.

MAC Cosmetics 266 Small Angle Brush

My first brush that I purchased was the MAC 266 – Small Angle Brush. I was in Soho sometime in 2013 and I went into the nearest MAC store looking for their dipdown fluid line to use for my brows. This was when I first started my makeup journey and was determined to get my eyebrows on fleek. I asked the guy that was helping me what the best brush to use to accomplish this fleekage with and he pulled this treasure. Fast forward almost two years late and I absolutely love my MAC 266 brush!!! When I’m using gel or pomades for my brows this is my first choice of what I’m using with the product. I’ve even used this same brush for powder products in my brows as well as to apply eyeliner on my lash line. Gotta love a multipurpose brush.

MAC 195 Concealer Brush

Speaking of multipurpose brushes and brows, my latest purchase (oh you haven’t seen the Collective Haulage that went down last week?? Check that out here) was the MAC 195 – their infamous concealer brush. So infamous this brush has been sold out at both the MAC stores I’ve visited in the last few months and online as well. So of course it remained on my list until I could get my hands on it. And it was so worth the wait!!!

The MAC 195 makes it easy to clean up your brows having the sides of the brush slanted with that perfect edge to erase your brow mistakes with concealer. The tip helps you create the perfect arch you would like to make for your brow shape. Although it’s a concealer brush I prefer to blend out my facial concealer with a damp beauty blending sponge but for brows it’s perfect for me.

That’s not all though, I told you it’s multipurpose right? I also use the MAC 195 brush to apply my cream bases on my eyelids. Whether it’s one of my color tattoos or my newly added to my collection paint pot, it lays that base down for you. I like to apply the cream product onto my lids with one side of the brush then blend it out and distribute the product evenly with the cleaner side of the brush. Works like a charm!

MAC Cosmetics 219 Pencil Brush

The third brush that I own from MAC Cosmetics is my MAC 219 brush – their Pencil Brush. I bought this brush from MACCosmetics.com in an effort to help my hooded eyelids get better definition when doing certain eyeshadow looks maybe like a cut crease or something to that effect. I also use the MAC 219 to smudge out eyeshadows underneath my eyes to give my looks that completed look. It’s also good to define that outer V area when you are trying to do a smoked out eyeshadow look.

As you can see the brushes from MAC Cosmetics are versatile and can be used for multiple purposes. The quality of the ferrels of the brushes are nice and sturdy and you know they will last a lifetime. It’s definitely worth the investment of some quality brushes that you know will effortlessly get the job done for you.

MAC Makeup Brushes-2

What’s your favorite makeup brush? As a makeup brush junkie, I would love to know your suggestions of what to consider to add to the collection next. I know I definitely want to get a MAC 217 brush at some point but for now I’ll stick to me $1 knockoffs from ebay, #dontjudgeme. Any other MAC brushes I should look into, maybe even a face brush. Even though their more expensive if they’re recommended by other junkies like myself I’m sure it’d be worth it 😉

Until next time, Stay Blessed Beauties!!!

  • I also love MAC brushes. I have also found (from a friend) that artist brushes, found at Michael’s, Hobby Lobby etc. are just as good come in the same varieties and can be cost effective.

    • Kara Rhem

I know I’ve heard that too! I need to look into those would definitely love to save a few coins

  • I’m such a novice when it comes to brushes. I have a couple from Sigma and elf, but that’s it.

    • Kay’s Ways

Sigma is definitely not novice status. I am hoping to pick some of those up during this upcoming mats. Elf brushes are good too, especially the studio line

  • This article is right on time for me. I have been the basic; foundation, loose powder, mascara and light tinted lip gloss for many years. I have recently begun to venture out into my eyeshadow (even though I tend to lean toward the neutral colors) and bolder lips. Nonetheless, I am not an expert at brushes at all. Great read.

  • These brushes sound so amazing! I think I would end up using the Mac 266 the most. I am still trying to memorize what makeup brush does what. There are so many shapes lol.

    • Kay’s Ways

Oh yeah when I first started I didn’t know what brush is for what. It’s best to play with them and see how to make them work for you. That’s why I love multipurpose brushes.

  • Great choice of brushes! I love that 266 brush for pomades too, it works wonders on my brows. This post is enabling me to go get more MAC brushes… ahhh! Thanks for sharing <3

    • Kay’s Ways

Aint it the truth for brows!!! We all want more brushes you know it’s easy to enable each other lol

  • Kayvona B.

Your title is so funny lol! My very first MAC brush was the 217. I wanted something that was multipurpose and they girl recommended the 217. That was back in 2010. I recently decided that I really wanted to upgrade my brushes to more MAC brushes so I repurchased the 217 and also got the 224, 242, and 212. I think my next purchase may be the 219 but I’m not in any rush to get it lol

    • Kay’s Ways

LOL thanks my vlogger boo always says #brushesup so I took a play on that for the name of the post. Oh my your collection sounds great, I’m sure the 217 and 224 will be the next two I have, everyone says they are staples

  • Nadeen

I absolutely love MAC but can you believe I don’t own any of their brushes?! I need some for when I use their eyeshadow but I usually only wear eyeliner mascara and lipstick. I do love getting my makeup done by them for a treat!

    • Kay’s Ways

Shoot, those are the basics. I don’t do eyeshadows on the regular either but when I do I like to have the tools that I know will get the job done. I only got my makeup done by them once for my baby shower 2 years ago, that’s what sucked me into my world of makeup lol

  • RattlesandHeels

I love MAC brushes! Can you believe I lost my collection on a flight. I’ve been trying to rebuild it.

    • Kay’s Ways

Oh no! I’d cry. The fun is that you get to rebuild again

  • I have the 226 and love it! I really want the other two you have as well, especially the 195! I also have the 217 and 224 and love them both, I can’t live without them!

    xo Priyanka

    • Kay’s Ways

Those are the next two brushes I’m going to have to pick up. Everyone raves about them being must haves

  • Tia

I have been looking to up my Brush game, Recently picked up 2 crease brushes from Crown brush, but i need a pencil brush for finer details.

    • Kay’s Ways

I like Crown brush too and crease brushes are definitely essential.

  • I’ve been wanting to get my hands on one of MAC’s brushes! Probably the 239 or 224, or maybe the 217. They’re supposed to last you a lifetime if you take care of them well! I really like Sigma brushes, though they seem to be getting so expensive nowadays that I might as well just spring for a MAC brush at this point!

    • Kay’s Ways

The 217 and 224 are definitely next on my list. I want to try Sigma too but every time I turn around they raise the prices. Hoping to score some at imats! But MAC is definitely worth it

  • JoAnna Niles

The only mac brush I have is the 217. I am pretty good with my sonia kashuk and sephora brushes for now. Getting more mac brushes are tempting though…

    • Kay’s Ways

They’re definitely tempting, I want the 217!!! That’ll probably be the next brush I get. I love Sephora brushes too!
