Bobbi Brown Approved Skincare and Makeup TIps

I was always an old soul listening to music from the likes of Luther Vandross, Rick James, Anita Baker, #RIPPrince.  My homegirl Diane always gets on me because I would know my old school jams word for word (blame it on me having a sister 10 and 12 years older than me). It’s funny how now when hearing Mister Cee on Hot 97’s Old School At Noon that the songs they are playing are actually considered old school.  These days you hear the early days of Mary J Blige, Brandy, Janet Jackson and the music takes you back to a particular time in your life.  I mean come on I’ve loved Usher since I was like 13, I don’t know about you but it definitely makes me feel some type of way!  But what does this have to do with skincare and makeup tips you ask?

Bobbi Brown Approved Skincare and Makeup Tips

All that to say I was intrigued when I came across this article from AARP The Magazine Beauty & Lifestyle Digital Edition (get it? I AM getting old LOL) but it features one of the OG’s of makeup, Bobbi Brown.  Now let me start off by saying the Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual: For Everyone from Beginner to Pro was my makeup bible when I first got into makeup.  I have it in digital version so I would always refer to it for anything I needed to know from the difference between synthetic and natural hair brushes and various application techniques.  In this must read book you learn the tools you needs to achieve a look for day or night, proper skin prep, makeup application tips and even advanced artistry techniques.  Bobbi Brown is definitely a wealth of knowledge and if you want to know the ins and out of makeup I highly recommend this book!

In her recent feature, 7 Tips to a Fabulous Face, Bobbi Brown shares her skincare and tips; a few of which I also believe in that I thought I’d share with you guys.

Tip #1 – Good makeup starts with good skin care.

“Plump up freshly washed skin with a killer moisturizer and eye cream. Consider adding serums and oils as an extra step in your treatment routine to nourish and improve dry sun-damaged skin.”

“Use a cleansing oil at night to dissolve makeup gently and leave your skin supple and smooth, ready for night repair products.”

I definitely believe pre and post makeup application, proper skincare techniques are a must.  Check out some of my previous Skincare posts and be on the watch for this weekend’s Skincare Sunday post!  I’ve been finishing up some of my skincare essentials and I’m looking for a new Spring & Summer skincare regimen.  Let me know if you have any recommendations down in the comments below.

Some of my skincare essentials from Paula’s Choice, Origins, StriVectin, Josie Moran, Glam Glow Benefit, Mario Badescu & Dr Jart

Tip #2 – Face makeup should match your skin tone.

“Whether you choose a tinted moisturizer, BB cream, tinted balm, stick serum or liquid foundation, make sure it’s a seamless skin-identical match – not too dark or too light. Swatch a few shades on the side of your face.  The color that disappears is the one you want. Double-check at the forehead to be sure.”

If it’s one thing I can’t stand is when my foundation is off.  The struggle is real across all spectrums from the fairest of the fair as well as us as women of color when it comes to finding a foundation that matches our skin tone perfectly.  As a makeup artist it is best to learn to mix colors on the spot to match your client but as a regular consumer you can always use your face powder to balance out the shade for a better match.  Foundation is one of my favorite makeup products to try out (besides my beloved lipsticks of course).   Check out the Foundation Demos and Reviews Playlist on the Kay’s Ways YouTube channel.

Tip #3 – Corrector and concealer change everything.

“Start with a peach or pink-toned corrector – a tinted shade of concealer that will neutralize dark circles and brighten them. Then layer a creamy concealer one shade lighter than your skin tone directly over the corrector shade to lighten, and blend it seamlessly into your complexion.”

These are my normal everyday go essentials for work, especially lately when it doesn’t seem like there’s enough time in the day.  On a daily basis I’m good with my skincare, correct and conceal then powder to set it all.  These few essentials will have you walking out the house without looking like you didn’t miss a minute of sleep.

Makeup essentials includes NARS All Day Luminous Weightless Foundation, NARS Radiant Creamy Concealer, LA Girls Pro Concealer & Corrector, Bobbi Brown Corrector, MAC Cosmetics Mineralized Skin Finish, Beauty Blender, Sephora Pro Brush #56

I got that book and got several sample from a previous swap to try out!! Nothing wrong with the classics!! Having great skincare is the foundation of any makeup routine..personally I rather have hydrated skin over a makeup look any day!

I’ve been really loving Bobbi Brown makeup lately. I adore the Skin Foundation SPF 15 and I just bought two cream eye shadows. I think her makeup is often overlooked because of her emphasis on neutrals, but I love it. I need to read that article!

  • Those are all great tips! Bobbi Brown was one of the first brands I turned to when I started using makeup on a regular basis. I like her no frills approach to makeup, always made to be flattering.
